Thoughts on QEP

Welcome to the blog! We have initiated this blog site to provide a space for the Shaw family to dialogue about ideas related to the QEP over the next few years.   3. QEP is a needed tool to enhance the students level of critical thinking.This tool allows the students to take more ownership in they education.

  4. Identifying one area that our students need help the most seem to be the most effective way to improve their learning experience at Shaw. But if we can piggyback another area that students also need help badly, that would be bigger bang for the bucks. For example, reading and critical thinking, I believe, can be easily combined and are complementary to each other.

I believe that if our students possess the ability to think critically then they can use that skill to navigate all subject areas and indeed navigate throughout their personal and professional lives. Within the concept of critical thinking lies metacognition. When our students are aware of their basic learning styles and what conditions are optimum for studying then they can self regulate and approach any course as active participants in the learning process.

  9. Hey! can you have somewhere in your website to give some hands-on tricks to enhance teaching like what you did during the Institution meeting in August? That would help. Then I will come and visit often;)

  10. I like the idea of colleagues coming together to share ideas and techniques. It reminds me a lot of being in grad school and all the TAs would talk amongst themselves and share ideas. It was great! This kind of sharing can help us all feel like we are a part of the learning system at Shaw. We all have contributions to make. Actually, I would like to have some feedback on how we can help acommodate the foreign language needs of the students in the various disciplines. It can be very beneficial to students in the job search to have some foreign language background. Please let me know what you need in this area, and I will see what I can do to help. Thanks.

    My Therapeutic Recreation Students and I have discussed the QEP and think that the students need better study skills as a foundation to be successful in higher education. We also see the need for critical thinking skills.

  12. I was absolutely awestruck a couple of years ago at the difference in my students immediately after they returned from their choir trip to Prague and Budapest. Whatever we choose to do for a QEP (writing, critical thinking/reading, information literacy), I would like to see it have a global awareness focus.

  13. Communications skills are so important. And yet, that category is so broad. Many of the components of communications skills are intertwined. I feel that in order to help promote writing skills, we need to promote reading in our students. I know that reading has helped me in being able to write because I am used to seeing sentences written correctly and in coherent order. There is a lot to be said for repetition and repeated exposure. One may not know the rule, but would remember (if not vaguely) that they had seen a sentence of a similar nature before. I think that the reading and writing need to complement each other.
